Evolution Controversy?
Your November 18, 2008 article, “Biology
Professors See No Evolution Controversy,” reveals how serious
is the creation-evolution controversy in Texas and the entire
United States. The
article reports on the findings of a survey by the Texas
Freedom Network of Austin, that revealed the beliefs of 450
biologists among the 1,019 biologists contacted. The
report states that 98% of these 450 reject the idea of “intelligent
design” as the origin of the universe and life. 94%
of them say that objections to evolution are not valid, and
80% of them do not want the “weaknesses” of evolution to
be taught to Texas students.
First, this is the result of fewer than
half of the biologists in the Texas universities contacted. Second,
to refuse to show the weaknesses of evolution definitely
is not “freedom” of inquiry but biased monopoly. Third,
it is well-known that evolutionary biology refuses to examine
the evidence of creation.
Perhaps one of the most shocking findings
of this survey is that 91% of these 450 biologists “believe
that support for evolution is compatible with religious faith.” We
are not told what kind of “religious faith” is under consideration. However,
the theory of evolution definitely is not compatible with
Christian faith, the truth revealed in the Bible.
Why do I say this? Consider
the contrasts: (1) Evolution says that life came from non-life,
but the Christian who follows the Bible knows that the beginning
of life came from God (Acts 17:24-25). (2) Evolution promotes
a system that is ruled by chemical reactions and blind chance,
whereas the Bible shows that God is the Creator, ruler, and
sustainer of the universe (Acts 17:26-28). (3) Evolution
cannot explain what caused the beginning of matter, whereas
the Bible says that the uncaused “cause” is God Himself (Genesis
1:1). (4) Evolution says that the universe is about 13 billion
years old, but the Bible would say that creation took place
in the relatively recent past—about 6,000 but not more than
8,000 or 10,000 years ago (Mark 10:6; Genesis 5). (5) Evolution
tells students that humans are merely advanced animals, not
qualitatively different from “lower” forms of life, but the
Bible says that man is a special creation of God, made in
God’s own moral likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). (5) Evolution
gives no objective basis for moral behavior, whereas the
Bible says that we are accountable to God our Creator and
must live according to His moral law (Romans 1:16-32).
Proponents of “Intelligent Design” don’t
go far enough. While
it is true that the universe and all creation had an “intelligent
Designer,” who is that Designer? The
Bible, our own conscience, and all creation testify that
this supernatural being who designed and created all things
is God Himself, the one revealed in the Bible and in Jesus
Christ our Lord and Savior.
I hope that the citizens of Texas will
not be deceived by the ignorant, biased, and closed opinions
of atheistic university professors. There
are massive amounts of evidence for creation in all fields
of learning. Let all people examine the evidence and see
that God did create all things in the universe—including
us!
